A Modern Renovation to a 1950’s Ranch Home

In a departure from the neighborhood’s trend of demolishing older homes, this full gut renovation and addition to a neglected 1950’s mid-century ranch home aimed to preserve its original features while modernizing its functionality. The addition blends with the existing structure, creating a cohesive flow that promotes an open layout and maximizes natural light in a formerly dark interior. Upgrades to the insulation, windows, HVAC, and electrical bring this home up to modern codes and comfort standards. This transformation revitalizes the property and sets a precedent for preserving the unique character of this mid-century neighborhood and its homes.

Original features such as the angled windows, old Chicago brick, and vaulted ceilings were preserved and emphasized in the design.

The kitchen features custom cabinets that maximize storage, reflecting a design driven by the Owners’ passion for cooking. Emphasizing both functionality and modern aesthetics, the layout features an efficient workspace while simultaneously providing a light-filled and inviting atmosphere for gathering.

The original floor plan was complicated by a dysfunctional layout of angled walls, dark spaces, and a poorly placed carport.

The floor plan was re-worked to enclose the carport and open up the space by removing unnecessary walls and creating new opportunities for natural light. The result is a space that lives much larger than its compact footprint
